Tesla Cybertruck Delivery Event Spectacular
After 4 years of waiting, we finally have some real(ish) specifications and pricing for Tesla’s Cybertruck, following a characteristically awkward delivery event hosted by Elon Musk.
From standing in the Cybertruck’s bed addressing the crowd in the shadows to the suspiciously bouncy “baseball” lightly thrown at the Tesla Armor Glass to the uncomfortable greeting of customers as they try and open locked passenger doors, this event had everything a Tesla event should.
Except what everyone tuning into the event came for…detailed specs and pricing.
There was some discussion about handling, steering, ride height, bulletproof-ness and, what every truck buyer wants to know, if it can outrun a Porsche (pronounced: “por-shuh”) 911 in the quarter-mile. But nothing about range, towing capacity, availability and pricing. For all that we had to wait until the Tesla website was updated after the event.
Today’s lucky delivery customers aside, most will be waiting into 2024 and 2025 for their Cybertruck deliveries. The $80,000 All-Wheel Drive and $100,000 Cyberbeast models will be available first in 2024. But if you’re looking for that $40,000 base model Musk announced back in 2019…sorry, it doesn’t exist. The base Rear-Wheel Drive model now starts at $60,000 and you’ll have to wait over a year for it.
Unfortunately none of the models come with the 500 miles of range mentioned in 2019 either. The best you’ll get is 340 miles in the All-Wheel Drive model, 320 miles in the Cyberbeast and 250 miles in the Rear-Wheel Drive version.
Both the All-Wheel Drive and Cyberbeast get 11,000 lbs. towing capacity and 600hp and 845hp respectively. Neither of those specs are available for the Rear-Wheel Drive model yet.
What’s next? I’m waiting for some real world reviews. I have no idea if delivery customers from today will post anything, but Marques Brownlee posted an image of himself driving a Cybertruck on X a couple hours ago saying: “All that being said, there is a LOT that wasn't covered in that keynote. Editing my video now, stay tuned”.
Very much looking forward to it.
